Workshop #1 - "From Folk Song to Art Music: Paving the Path"
Presenter: Dr. Jill Trinka
Date: October 10, 2008
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Description: Kodály-based instruction develops students' musical skills initially through the use of folk songs, singing games, and other music of oral/aural tradition. Refining skills through the use of art music is a critical extension that is not always realized in the classroom. The focus of this workshop is to involve participants actively in learning a variety of folk songs, singing games, and play parties that can serve as foundations for exploring accessible art music masterpieces in grades K-5. Participants will listen, sing, move, play, read, write, analyze, improvise, and create music while exploring numerous ways to develop children's love of art music based on knowledge and understanding. Particular attention will be drawn to an extended grade-level pedagogic study of Bela Bartok's "Play," in For Children, Volume 1, together with a sequence of activities aimed at unfolding this marvelously rich composition for music learning.
